Synthesis of Ammonium and Organic Compounds from Air Component Gasses by Soft X-Ray Induced Reactions at Atmospheric Pressure

The photochemical gas-phase reactions at atmospheric pressure using light sources with wavelengths shorter than ultraviolet are thought to be very important especially in the fields of environmental science which involve ozone hole generation, the generation of aerosols, and N2 or CO2 fixation etc. Photochemical synthesis in the atmosphere, however, has rarely been studied especially in the photo-excitation energy range more than 10eV. Synchrotron radiation has the essential advantage of being able to induce photochemical reactions since the photon energy regime well matches the energies of core or valence electron excitation. This suggests that SR has the potential of synthesizing materials which are difficult to form by other methods at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure.
